CVS Small Grant Applications for 2007-2008

Applications are invited for the 2007-2008 round of Community Volunteering Scheme (CVS) Small Grants. Grants of up to £1,000 per year are available to small, locally based voluntary or community organisations that involve volunteers in their work.

CVS is a grant programme funded by the Voluntary and Community Unit (VCU) in the Department for Social Development (DSD). Its objective is to: encourage and support volunteering; create and enhance opportunities for volunteers that will encourage learning and good practice; and promote a positive image of volunteering and community participation.

Small Grants are targeted specifically at small, locally based organisations that promote volunteering opportunities amongst those who are not in paid employment and other groups of people who are under-represented in the volunteering population (such as those with disabilities, older people, younger people and people from minority ethnic communities).

The Small Grants are administered and distributed by Northern Ireland 's 15 volunteer centres. To find out how your organisation can apply for a Small Grant, please contact your local volunteer centre (listed below). The scheme will close to applications for 2007/08 in early March 2008.

CVS Aims

The aims of CVS are to:

•  Promote active citizenship and diversity and make volunteering more inclusive by increasing activity within groups under-represented in the volunteering population. (These include: people unemployed or not in paid work; 16-25 year olds; people over 50; people with disabilities; and members of minority ethnic communities).

•  Increase the number of people volunteering, particularly those new to volunteer activity.

•  Support the development of good practice and ensure a wide range of volunteering opportunities that enhance learning for volunteers, and other benefits.

•  Support projects that benefit individuals and communities experiencing disadvantage, including communities of place and interest, and contribute to New Targeting Social Need.

Who can apply for a CVS Small Grant?

•  Any small, locally based volunteer-involving organisation that is independently established for charitable purposes and has a constitution or set of rules defining aims, objectives and operational procedures.

•  Grants cannot be made to individuals or to statutory or commercial organisations.

•  At least 40% of the volunteers involved in the proposed project must be people who are not in paid work. Applications must also demonstrate how the proposed project will involve volunteers from one or more of the under-represented groups.

•  Organisations with a Main CVS Grant or a Small Grant from another volunteer centre will not be eligible.

What can the Grant be used for?

•  Volunteer expenses (travel, subsistence, childcare, protective clothing etc.) and training for volunteers.

•  Project running costs that are attributable to volunteering.

•  Equipment required by the volunteering project.

•  Grants may not be spent on salary costs or other staff related costs.
